Meet the Colonel:
Fred E. Bamberger was a pilot, war photographer, intelligence officer, and lifelong aviation historian whose remarkable career spanned the
Golden Age of Flight, World War II, the Cold War, and the dawn of the Jet Age.
As a young aviation photographer, he documented many of aviation's greatest pioneers—including Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, Jimmy Doolittle, and Roscoe Turner—and was an eyewitness to the tragic destruction of the Hindenburg at Lakehurst, New Jersey, where he photographed the disaster as it unfolded.
During World War II, he served as a photographic officer with the Twelfth Air Force in Italy, combining aerial reconnaissance, combat photography, and intelligence to support Allied operations. Throughout his life, Fred remained dedicated to preserving aviation history, documenting the people, aircraft, and events that shaped the twentieth century.
Our mission is to preserve and make accessible this extraordinary collection, with a special focus on
Lt. Colonel Bamberger's rare Kodachrome color photography. These images provide a vivid, firsthand look at military airfields, historic aircraft, wartime operations, and the people who shaped aviation history.
Through this collection, we strive to honor the achievements, innovation, and sacrifices of those who took to the skies and ensure their stories continue to inspire future generations.
